In a bid to combat child marriage in Ghana, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MOGCSP) has collaborated with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to launch the Child Marriage Information Portal. The portal aims to provide credible information on child marriage and related issues.
At a media engagement in Kumasi, Hajia Saphia Tamimu, Head of the Child Marriage Unit at MOGCSP, explained that the portal is designed to support the media, NGOs, CSOs, and the public in their efforts to eradicate child marriage in Ghana by 2030.
The portal was developed in 2021 by the Domestic Violence Secretariat in collaboration with UNFPA. It provides a one-stop-shop database on child marriage in Ghana, offering information on child marriage, sexual and gender-based violence, and related issues.
Senanu Agbozo, Consultant for the Child Marriage Information Portal at UNFPA Ghana, highlighted the importance of the portal in providing a centralized platform for researchers to share and access information on child marriage in Ghana.
The launch of the Child Marriage Information Portal is a significant step towards addressing the issue of child marriage in Ghana, which affects many young girls. According to UNICEF data, four out of 10 women in Sub-Saharan Africa were married before the age of 18.
