Nana Addo Danqua Akuffo-Addo came into power with grand promises. He assured us that his wealth would keep him from dipping into the public purse. He vowed to safeguard our finances, deliver value for money, and uphold democratic governance. But what did we actually witness?
Instead of fiscal prudence, we saw him indulging in luxury charter flights, complete with showers. He embarked on the construction of what became the most expensive pit in the world, under the guise of building a cathedral. His administration borrowed more than all previous governments combined, plunging the nation into unprecedented debt.
His tenure was marked by terror. Over ten people were murdered during elections under his watch. Peaceful protestors, whose only crime was demanding action against the galamsey menace destroying our water bodies, were arbitrarily arrested and jailed. Nana Addo’s special vigilante forces, clad in military uniforms, were used to influence elections, as seen at Ayawaso West Wuogon and other places. These forces even stormed lawful court sessions to free their compatriots charged with crimes!
Intoxicated by power, Nana Addo did not tolerate criticism—a hallmark of a dictator. Dr. Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe warned us, but we took his caution for granted. The pain and suffering left in Nana Addo’s wake will endure for a long time.
Never again should Ghanaians elect such a breed. Once bitten, we should be twice shy. Together, we must ensure that our future leaders prioritize the nation’s welfare over personal indulgence.
