As we approach the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections, it’s crucial to understand what makes candidates or political parties emerge victorious. The most significant factor is the economy. When the economy falters—when prices soar and living conditions deteriorate—nothing else matters. The ruling party is often punished for these failures, and in Ghana, the situation has reached unprecedented levels.

Economic Hardships and Mismanagement

The economy is the lifeblood of any nation, and when it suffers, so do its people. In Ghana, for the first time, pensioners experienced a “clean haircut,” a drastic reduction in their benefits. This has never happened before in our history. Additionally, the Bank of Ghana, our central bank, became bankrupt—a first for our country. These economic missteps have left a lasting impact on the populace, eroding trust in the ruling party’s ability to manage the nation’s finances.

Corruption and Misappropriation

Corruption has also played a significant role in the current administration’s downfall. Millions of dollars meant to clean the Odaw River were found in a minister’s home. Shockingly, the money was returned to the minister without punishment or proper justification. This blatant act of “loot and keep” has further disillusioned the public.

Environmental Degradation and Illegal Mining

The issue of illegal mining, or “galamsey,” has also plagued the nation. Some ministers and party functionaries have been implicated in this destructive practice, mining forest reserves and water bodies with impunity. They operate with the confidence that the law will not catch up with them, further damaging the environment and the country’s natural resources.

Suppression of Dissent

Critics of the government have become enemies, facing arbitrary imprisonment or being prevented from demonstrating. This suppression of dissent stifles democracy and creates an atmosphere of fear and repression.

Skyrocketing Import Duties

Currently, duties at the ports have skyrocketed, making it nearly impossible for importers and individuals to afford bringing goods into Ghana. This has led to exorbitant prices for basic amenities such as cars, refrigerators, and trucks, which now face over 28 levied taxes. This situation has further strained the pockets of ordinary Ghanaians, exacerbating the economic hardships they face daily.

Compelling Reasons for Change

Given these circumstances, it is clear why breaking the 8—referring to the ruling party’s attempt to secure another 4 years after 2 consecutive terms—is impossible. The economic hardships, corruption, environmental degradation, suppression of dissent, and skyrocketing import duties are compelling reasons why such perpetrators should not be retained in office. The people of Ghana deserve leaders who prioritize their well-being, uphold the rule of law, and work towards sustainable development.

As we head to the polls, let us remember the importance of accountability and integrity in leadership. The future of our nation depends on it.
