Chicago, IL – December 1, 2024: Thanksgiving is more than just a holiday; it is a heartfelt reflection on the blessings of the past year. On the last Thursday of November, families reunite to express gratitude, fostering a sense of closeness and connection. This tradition was vividly brought to life at the Presbyterian Church of Ghana Redemption Congregation and The Church of The Ghanaian Community of Chicago .
Following the Thanksgiving celebrations, churches across the USA mark the occasion with special Thanksgiving and Harvest services, often drawing the largest congregations of the year. This tradition aligns with the biblical call to give thanks, as illustrated in 1 Thessalonians 5:18: “In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”
At the Presbyterian Church of Ghana Redemption Congregation, the atmosphere was electric with excitement. The parking lot and surrounding streets were packed, making it a challenge for latecomers to find a spot. The congregation included esteemed chiefs and queens from the Chicago area, adding a regal touch to the gathering.
Reverend Sam Okyere Mireku, the minister in charge, delivered a powerful message centered on the theme “Stay Awake.” He posed thought-provoking questions: “Today, being Thanksgiving, are you staying awake? If you knew Jesus was coming tomorrow at noon, would you still go to work? How much more should we prepare to meet the Lord?” His sermon encouraged the congregation to reflect on their moral compass and discard grudges and animosities.
Reverend Mireku concluded with a stirring call to action: “Beloved, stay awake, watch, and pray as you give cheerfully to the Lord because the Lord loves a cheerful giver.” The men’s ministry and women’s ministry engaged in a joyful competition through their musical selections, adding to the festive spirit.
The Church of the Ghanaian Community of Chicago also celebrated Harvest and Thanksgiving with the theme “Cheerful Giving.” Reverend Dr. Noonoo’s sermon, based on Exodus 35:4-6, 20-22, and 2 Corinthians 9:1-11, emphasized the importance of giving to God and allowing Him to work through our offerings. He inspired the congregation with these words: “May you give whatever you have to God and let Him do whatever He wants with it.”
There were lively auctions raising funds for the church, adding a vibrant and engaging element to the celebration. The church choir led the congregation in splendid and spirit-filled Ghanaian praise and worship songs, creating an atmosphere of joy and reverence.
