As Ghana prepares for the 2024 elections, journalists are bracing themselves for the challenges that come with covering high-stakes events. The UniMAC Faculty of Journalism and Media Studies has highlighted the importance of journalists’ safety awareness, particularly in crowded and potentially volatile situations.

Journalists may face hazards such as tear gas and rubber bullets used by security agencies to control crowds, mob violence, including physical assaults or targeted attacks, and sexual harassment or assault, which is especially concerning in large gatherings.

To mitigate these risks, journalists are advised to stay on the edge of crowds, avoid confrontational situations, and carry personal protective gear. Staying aware, prepared, and prioritizing safety while reporting is crucial.

In addition to these precautions, the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has established guidelines for election coverage, emphasizing the importance of accuracy, fairness, and professionalism in reporting.

The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) has also organized safety training for journalists, highlighting the need for cooperation between the media and security agencies to ensure a safe and successful electoral process.

By prioritizing their safety and adhering to established guidelines, journalists can play a critical role in promoting a peaceful and democratic electoral process in Ghana.
