In the complex landscape of Ghanaian politics, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has found himself at the center of a paradox. As the head of the Economic Management Team, he was entrusted by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to steer the nation through its economic challenges. Yet, as the economic situation has deteriorated, Dr. Bawumia has increasingly distanced himself from the administration’s failures, raising questions about his leadership , accountability and taking responsibility.
Economic Management and the Cedi Crisis
When President Akufo-Addo declared that Dr. Bawumia would be responsible for addressing Ghana’s economic woes, many hoped for a turnaround. Dr. Bawumia, with his impressive academic credentials and experience, seemed well-suited for the task. He famously claimed to have “locked the Cedi and given the keys to the IGP,” a metaphor meant to assure Ghanaians of his control over the currency’s stability. However, the reality has been starkly different. Under his watch, the Cedi has plummeted from a 1:4 ratio against the dollar at the end of John Mahama’s tenure to a staggering 1:17. This decline has exacerbated the economic hardships faced by ordinary Ghanaians, leading to widespread disillusionment.
The Question of Accountability
Despite his central role in economic management, Dr. Bawumia has often deflected responsibility, attributing the economic downturn to external factors and previous administrations. This distancing has not gone unnoticed. Critics argue that as the head of the Economic Management Team, he should be held accountable for the current state of the economy. The question arises: who in their right mind would entrust the nation’s leadership to someone who has overseen such a dramatic economic decline?
Leadership and Human Rights
Dr. Bawumia’s leadership extends beyond economic management. As the head of the Police Council, he bears responsibility for the actions of the police force. The tragic deaths of eight individuals during the 2020 elections remain a dark stain on his record. The lack of accountability and justice for these victims has led many to question his commitment to human rights and the value he places on human lives. How can a leader who appears indifferent to such loss wield ultimate power?
The Broader Implications
The implications of Dr. Bawumia’s distancing from the Nana Addo government are profound. It reflects a broader trend of political leaders evading responsibility and accountability. This behavior undermines public trust and confidence in the government, eroding the very foundations of democracy. As Ghana approaches another election cycle, voters must critically evaluate the track records and accountability of those seeking office.
Public Debt Concerns
Adding to the economic woes, Ghana’s public debt has been a growing concern. In the decade leading up to 2022, the country’s public debt averaged 62.4% of GDP, significantly higher than the Sub-Saharan Africa region’s average of 43.7%. By 2022, Ghana’s public debt had soared to 92.4% of GDP. Alarmingly, the current administration has accumulated more debt than all previous governments combined, from 1967 to Mahama’s tenure. This staggering increase in debt further questions the economic management under Dr. Bawumia’s oversight.
Conclusion
Dr. Bawumia’s journey from a promising economic manager to a figure distancing himself from a failing administration is a cautionary tale. It underscores the importance of accountability, transparency, and genuine leadership in governance. As Ghanaians reflect on the past and look towards the future, the lessons from Dr. Bawumia’s tenure must not be forgotten. The nation deserves leaders who not only promise change but also deliver on their commitments and take responsibility for their actions.Dr. Bawumia is not a viable choice and must not be given the chance to further harm our nation. This time, we must see through his alluring deceptions and reject them.
