This new facility is a heartfelt tribute to Nana Somuah, who tirelessly advocated for the establishment of this senior living community in partnership with the Illinois Housing Development Authority. Stephen’s Commons stands as a testament to his dedication and commitment to uplifting the community.
Nana Stephen Akwasi Somuah Sr. was not just a devoted father; he was a tireless advocate for his community. His commitment to enhancing the quality of life for residents led him to join the board of directors at Uptown Lakeview Towers, where he dedicated himself to improving living conditions for all. Recognizing the need for greater management skills, Nana Somuah went back to school to earn his management credentials, ultimately becoming the board president of the Twin Towers of Lakeview—a place he proudly called home for more than 40 years.
During his tenure, Nana Somuah implemented significant improvements to the community, ensuring that the Twin Towers were not only safe and clean, but also underwent extensive renovations. He hired skilled workers, enhanced security measures, and expertly managed construction projects for all 500 units, transforming the living experience for countless residents. Rather than simply residing in the Twin Towers, Stephen actively worked to create a more vibrant and welcoming environment.
His visionary leadership did not stop there; he took his advocacy to the Illinois Housing Development Authority, championing the need for a Senior Assisted Living Facility to be built adjacent to the Twin Towers parking lot at 835 W. Wilson Ave, Chicago, Illinois. After tireless negotiations, the state granted funding for the project. Unfortunately, shortly after this victory, Nana Somuah fell ill and bravely fought for two additional years before God called him home.
Nana Somuah’s legacy of hard work, love, and determination continues to resonate in the hearts of those he touched—both in Chicago and in his native Ghana. His contributions will not be forgotten, as his efforts have paved the way for a better community.
In honor of his memory, the City of Chicago Housing Authority held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Senior Assisted Living facility on August 24, 2022. The new building will stand proudly as Stephen’s Commons, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities designed to support the 55 and older community. This new establishment not only commemorates Nana Somuah’s unwavering dedication but also embodies the values he instilled in those around him. He will always be remembered as a beacon of hope and leadership in the community.
