Today is Farmers Day in Ghana, and it’s a special day to honor the hardworking farmers and fishermen who contribute to the country’s food security and economic growth. This year marks the 40th National Farmers Day celebration, which was launched on November 4, 2024, at the Efua Sutherland Park in Accra.

The event features a series of activities, including awarding prizes to deserving farmers and fishers for their best practices and outputs. A National Farmers Forum also takes place, where award winners can meet policymakers and experts on technological advances in the agricultural sector.
Interestingly, Farmers Day was instituted in 1985 by the Ghana government after the industries showed a 30 percent growth in 1984, following a severe drought that led to food shortages. Since then, it has been celebrated on the first Friday of December every year, but in election years, it’s held on the first Friday of November.

This year’s celebration is particularly significant, as Ghana is experiencing food inflation, with the cost of food increasing by 22.10 percent in September 2024 compared to the same month in the previous year. The government has implemented programs like “Planting for Food and Jobs” and “Rearing for Food and Jobs” to address food insecurity and enhance agricultural productivity.
As we celebrate Farmers Day today, let’s appreciate the vital role farmers play in feeding the nation and contributing to Ghana’s economic prosperity.
