Starting July 1, undocumented immigrants in Illinois had the opportunity to apply for a standard driver’s license. This change comes as the state retires the Temporary Visitor Driver’s License and introduces the Limited Driver’s License in its place.

“Today is a win-win, today is a no-brainer, today makes us a safer state, a better state, a more equitable state, a more welcoming state,” proclaimed Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias.

To qualify, applicants must satisfy all state requirements, including proving they’ve resided in Illinois for at least one year and providing proof of car insurance. However, the new licenses cannot be used to obtain a Real ID or to register to vote.

Additionally, a variety of other Illinois laws took effect earlier this year on January 1, 2024.
