Ghana’s Ministry of Health has made a significant move in fighting Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) by launching two groundbreaking documents: a national strategy for managing the condition and a vaccine development policy. This bold step is expected to greatly improve the lives of individuals living with SCD in the country.

Approximately 15,000 newborns are affected by SCD annually in Ghana, with 25% of Ghanaians carrying the sickle cell trait. SCD is an umbrella term for a group of inherited disorders where a gene mutation causes red blood cells to have an abnormal crescent shape. These cells are rigid, blocking smaller blood vessels and preventing oxygen from reaching parts of the body. This can lead to debilitating pain and other complications.

The national strategy outlines a comprehensive approach to addressing all aspects of SCD, from prevention and early detection to treatment and support. This roadmap will enable healthcare providers to identify and manage the disease more effectively, reducing complications and improving patients’ quality of life.

The vaccine policy sets out strategic interventions to achieve self-sufficiency in vaccine production and manufacturing. This will enable Ghana to develop and distribute vaccines tailored to its specific needs, ensuring timely access to life-saving treatments.
