Ghana’s Electoral Commission took a significant step towards transparency and accountability in the upcoming December 2024 elections by releasing the certified voters register to all registered political parties and independent presidential candidates. This move, which happened on November 6, 2024, follows the country’s electoral regulations.

The Commission provided soft copies of the certified voters register on external hard drives, containing crucial information such as:

  • Valid Voters Register: A list of eligible voters.
  • Exceptions List: Voters who are exempt from certain requirements.
  • Multiples List: Individuals registered multiple times.
  • Transferred Voters List: Voters who have changed their registration location.
  • Absent Voters List: Voters who will be absent on election day.
  • Manual Verification List: Voters requiring manual verification.
  • Proxy Voters List: Voters casting ballots on behalf of others.
  • Special Voters List*: Special categories of voters.

Notably, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) requested a summary of these lists, which the Electoral Commission provided, going beyond their legal requirements. The Commission generated regional summaries to enhance transparency and credibility.

This is the first time the Electoral Commission has provided such detailed statistics, previously only providing soft copies of the certified voters register since 1992. Deputy Chairman, Operations, Samuel Tettey, assured stakeholders that the certified voters register is robust and credible, urging public support for free, fair, transparent, and credible elections in December 7, 2024.
