Global Leaders Unite for One Health at G20 Meeting

The Quadripartite collaboration on One Health, comprising the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), co-hosted the G20 High-Level Meeting on One Health on October 30, 2024.

Quadripartite partners organize High-Level One Health meeting in collaboration with Brazil’s Ministry of Health at the G20 Summit

This landmark event brought together global leaders to tackle pressing health challenges through an integrated approach connecting human, animal, plant, and environmental health. Brazil’s Minister of Health, Dr. Nísia Trindade, emphasized preparing countries for climate change’s consequences on human health.

FAO Assistant Director-General Thanawat Tiensin welcomed the G20 Health Ministerial Declaration as a vital step towards integrating the One Health approach globally. UNEP Assistant Secretary-General Ligia Noronha urged focusing on preventative actions, giving equal weight to every voice, discipline, and sector.

WHO Deputy Director-General Dr. Michael Ryan reaffirmed WHO’s commitment to prevention, preparedness, and building resilient health systems. WOAH Director-General Dr. Emmanuelle Soubeyran highlighted WOAH’s expertise in animal health and supporting veterinary services.

The meeting underscored the collaborative efforts of the Quadripartite and the invaluable contributions of the One Health High-Level Expert Panel in providing scientific advice for evidence-based policymaking. This high-level event marked a significant step towards fostering coordinated action and enhancing collaboration across sectors to improve health outcomes for all.
