History was made at the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Apia, Samoa, as children aged 4-14 became the youngest official delegates to ever attend the prestigious event. These young delegates took the stage to share their thoughts on what makes them feel safe and happy, moving the audience of leaders, ministers, and policymakers with their heartfelt presentations.

The special event, “One Resilient Common Future: Where All Children Are Cared For and Protected,” marked a significant shift in global policymaking by creating a space for children to express their views. Moderated by Layne Robinson and Helen Jones, the panel featured stirring speeches, including a keynote address by 12-year-old Kyannalei Agamalu Lesā-Ah Liki, who urged leaders to listen to children’s voices.

Kyannalei’s powerful words echoed the event’s mission: to amplify the voices of the Commonwealth’s youngest citizens and ensure they are heard in global discussions. This emphasis on child welfare and protection reforms aligns with the 2022 Kigali Declaration on Child Care and Protection Reform.

Justice Vui Clarence Nelson of Samoa’s Supreme Court advocated for a permanent children’s summit at future CHOGMs, stressing that millions of children still lack a platform at global forums. David Lammy MP, Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Affairs of the United Kingdom, underscored the fundamental responsibility of governments to protect and empower children within the Commonwealth.

The event featured inspiring performances by the Australian Children’s Choir and expert contributions from Michelle Muller of UNICEF Pacific. This historic panel demonstrated that the Commonwealth’s youngest citizens will no longer be ignored, paving the way for a brighter future where their voices are heard.

The 2024 CHOGM, held from October 21-26, brought together leaders from Commonwealth countries to address global challenges and build resilience. The theme, “One Resilient Common Future: Transforming our Common Wealth,” highlighted the need for member countries to harness their strengths and unlock potential for a resilient common future.
