Ghana has taken a significant step towards disaster preparedness with the launch of the Early Warning for All (EW4All) initiative on October 28, 2024. This initiative is in response to UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ 2022 call to action. Minister for Communications and Digitalization, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, outlined four pillars to ensure the success of EW4All, demonstrating Ghana’s commitment to leveraging technology and communication to safeguard lives and properties.

The four pillars of EW4All are:

•Disaster Risk Knowledge and Data:- Systematically collecting and analyzing risk data to identify vulnerabilities and hazards, enabling informed decision-making.

  • Effective Observation and Forecasting:- Utilizing cutting-edge technologies for hazard monitoring and early warnings, reducing the impact of disasters through accurate forecasting.
  • Dissemination and Communication:- Ensuring risk information reaches all stakeholders clearly and promptly, facilitating swift action.
  • Preparedness to Respond:- Building national and community response capabilities through training, infrastructure development, and emergency planning.

Minister Owusu-Ekuful’s department will lead Pillars 2 and 3, focusing on observation, forecasting, and effective communication. By establishing a robust monitoring system and clear communication channels, Ghana aims to minimize the impact of disasters and protect its citizens.

This initiative demonstrates Ghana’s proactive approach to disaster management, and Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful’s dedication to harnessing technology for the greater good. With EW4All, Ghana is taking a significant step towards creating a safer, more resilient future for its people.
