The Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Akwasi Konadu, emphasized the importance of strictly enforcing the Wildlife Resources Management Act (Act 1115) provisions to preserve Ghana’s wildlife resources for sustainable development. He highlighted wildlife’s crucial role in enhancing ecological resources, making preservation essential.

The Act, enacted in 2023 and signed into law by the President on March 1, 2024, replaces the outdated Wild Animals Preservation Act, 1961 (Act 43). It consolidates and revises laws related to wildlife and protected areas, incorporating international conventions that Ghana has signed.

Mr. Konadu stressed that enforcing the Act’s provisions would help preserve the country’s wildlife resources. He noted that keeping actors in the wildlife space abreast with the new law is important. The Act regulates wildlife ownership, protected areas, management of wildlife outside protected areas, licenses and permits, management of wildlife in captivity, and international conventions.

During a Stakeholders Consultative Dialogue, Prof. Clement Akapka from Crabbe Law Firm explained the Act’s legal provisions and international connections. The interactive session allowed participants to engage in discussions, ask questions, and contribute to a deeper understanding of the Act.

Mr. Akwasi Konadu’s call to action emphasizes the need for regulatory institutions to enforce Act 1115 provisions, ensuring the preservation of Ghana’s wildlife resources for future generations.
