The Northern Development Forum (NDF) has issued a heartfelt plea for peace in Bawku, a town in northern Ghana that has been plagued by mindless violence and needless deaths over the past four years. The people of Bawku have endured immense suffering, with no end in sight, as acts of provocation and impunity continue to escalate.
The NDF is alarmed by the diversion of scarce resources from promoting livelihoods and development to endless security and mediation efforts. Citizens of Northern Ghana are dismayed and traumatized by the recent clashes, urging the government to take decisive action to restore peace in the area.
The conflict in Bawku has deep roots, dating back to the 1980s, when the chieftaincy dispute between the Mamprusi and Kusasi ethnic groups first erupted. The dispute has been fueled by political manipulation, social media, and the proliferation of weapons.
Despite efforts by the National Peace Council and other stakeholders to promote dialogue and peaceful resolution, the violence persists. The NDF is calling on the government to develop a comprehensive strategy to address the root causes of the conflict and remove those who provoke violence.
The people of Northern Ghana are tired of living in fear and poverty. They desire peace, development, and a chance to thrive. The NDF believes that the region’s cultural and historical diversity should be celebrated, not exploited for power struggles.
The escalating violence has resulted in numerous deaths, destruction of property, and displacement of people. The lack of a clear government plan to address the conflict is exacerbating the situation, diverting scarce resources from development to security and mediation efforts.
The NDF urges the government to intervene decisively, and for the community to come together to promote peace and understanding. By celebrating the region’s diversity, the people of Bawku can build a brighter future.
Signed by Major Albert Don-Chebe (Rtd.), Chairman of the NDF, the plea is a call to action for all stakeholders to work together towards peace and development in Northern Ghana. The NDF is a non-partisan organization dedicated to promoting peace and development in the five northern regions of Ghana.
