The World Health Organization’s European Region has maintained its polio-free status for 2023, confirmed by the European Regional Commission for the Certification of Poliomyelitis Eradication. Reports from Member States showed no wild poliovirus circulation and robust surveillance systems to detect any importations.

However, concerns remain due to stagnated progress in some countries, including suboptimal immunization coverage and inadequate outbreak preparedness. Conflicts, like in Ukraine, pose a significant threat to immunization programs.

Despite challenges, vaccination efforts continue, including in the Gaza Strip. Recent poliovirus detections in environmental samples in Spain and other countries are being investigated, with no reported cases of paralysis.

World Polio Day, celebrated on October 24, highlights global efforts to eradicate polio. Rotary International has played a crucial role in these efforts.
