The Volta River Authority has announced the renovation of the 160-megawatt Kpong Dam and spillway gates in Akuse, Eastern Region, after over 40 years of operation. The project enhances the dam’s safety, reliability and lifespan.

At a stakeholders’ engagement meeting, VRA’s Director of Engineering Services, Kwaku Wiafe, explained the project’s objectives: rehabilitating the rock-filled dam displaced by water waves and upgrading spillway gates for dependable water passage.

The renovation restores upstream dykes and spillway gates, preventing water pollution and protecting fishing. The 10-kilometer Okwenya Junction to Akuse road will also be rehabilitated for improved haulage and motor vehicle access.

VRA addressed stakeholders’ environmental concerns, pledging measures to minimize risks, including controlled truck speeds and regular road watering.

The renovation ensures Ghana’s continued benefit from reliable power supply, supporting economic growth and productivity.
