Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, running mate for Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP), has made startling allegations against National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama. In a GTV Breakfast Show interview on October 25, 2024, Dr. Prempeh claimed Mahama’s government openly promoted illegal mining, or galamsey, a first in Ghana’s history.
“The only government to openly encourage illegal mining is John Dramani Mahama’s,” Dr. Prempeh stated, citing past actions as evidence of Mahama’s support.
Dr. Prempeh also asserted that AngloGold Ashanti sought President Mahama’s assistance with illegal miners but was ignored. “AngloGold Ashanti sent SOS calls to President Mahama, even through the Ashanti king, but he remained unresponsive.”
These allegations come amidst Ghana’s ongoing struggles with illegal mining’s environmental and economic impacts.
