October 10 marks World Mental Health Day, a global initiative aimed at raising awareness about mental health issues and promoting support for those affected. This year’s theme, “Mental Health at Work,” highlights the critical role of safe and healthy working environments in protecting employees’ mental well-being.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that depression and anxiety result in approximately 12 billion lost workdays annually, costing the global economy around $1 trillion. Unhealthy working conditions, including stigma, discrimination, and harassment, can significantly impact mental health.

To address this issue, the WHO’s South-East Asia Regional Office (SEARO) has launched SEARO Care, a groundbreaking initiative to improve mental health and wellness among its employees. The program focuses on enhancing the working environment and promoting mental health.

SEARO Care aims to create a supportive and healthy workspace by providing ergonomic office spaces, exercise facilities, and areas for socialization. Additionally, the initiative includes training managers on mental health, conducting mindfulness workshops, and establishing counseling services and referral pathways.

By prioritizing mental health, SEARO aims to foster a positive organizational culture characterized by trust, open communication, and mutual respect. This initiative serves as a model for other companies and organizations in the region.

The WHO urges others to follow suit, recognizing the transformative impact of prioritizing mental health in the workplace. As the world marks World Mental Health Day, the organization calls for collective action to create supportive environments where employees feel valued, respected, and cared for.

“By leading with concrete actions, we can recognize the importance of mental health at work and create a culture change that benefits everyone,” said a WHO spokesperson.
