The Ghanaian community in Chicago came together in great numbers to honor the life of the beloved Margaret Yaa Sampomaa, mother of Godfred Yeboah, who recently passed away in Ghana.
Attendees traveled from across the USA, including Godfred’s classmate, Mr. Tamakloe, who joined from Ghana, to show his support for the Yeboah family. Chiefs and Queens from the Ghanaian community graced the occasion with their presence. Other notable attendees are the President of the Ghana National Council, Mr. Kassim Abubakari, and former President Paa Kwasi Sam.
A testament to Margaret’s disciplined spirit, for the first time, the bereaved family arrived thirty minutes ahead of the announced time, a rare occurrence in a community often marked by tardiness at events.
Elder Amonoo opened the ceremony with a heartfelt prayer, reminding everyone that we belong to the Lord whether we live or die. He then dedicated the entire celebration to the Lord’s care. Minister Jamfoua’s rendition of “Blessed Assurance, Jesus Is Mine” moved many to joyful tears.
In a series of heartfelt tributes, her son, Godfred Yeboah, shared memories of his mother’s unwavering support, balancing family care with nursing him back to health after a bicycle accident in Ghana. He fondly recalled her scolding him for his adventurous skydiving, urging him to “stop that foolishness.” Margaret was remembered as a woman of virtue, compassion, and fortitude, raising five children as a single mother after her police officer husband passed away at a young age.
Margaret’s journey from selling tiger nuts as a young girl in Accra to becoming an astute trader in used clothes, groceries, and foodstuffs was celebrated. A strong and devoted member of the Presbyterian church, she left an indelible mark by building and selling a house to the church in Ashaiman, demonstrating her commitment and generosity.
Some highlights of the evening included the family’s taking to the dance floor to celebrate Margaret’s legacy with joy and love.
Pastor Charles Amaning’s sermon drew from 1 Corinthians and 1 Thessalonians. He delivered a message of hope beyond the grave and urged everyone to embrace the promise of a paradise for the redeemed. He concluded by inviting the audience to dedicate their lives to Jesus.
Apostle Dr. Paintsil offered prayers for the family, emphasizing that true comfort and strength come from a personal encounter with Jesus. He paid tribute to all mothers, noting that a mother’s love is the closest reflection of Agape love.
DJ Chief’s music and the excellent coordination by the emcee, Mr. Aaron Marfo, enriched the event and ensured a memorable tribute to a remarkable woman whose legacy of love, discipline, and community service will continue to inspire.
