_Galamsey Talks Yield #STOPGALAMSEY- Commitment: Akufo-Addo, Organised Labour Pledge Collaboration

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Organised Labour have agreed to collaborate on tackling the illicit small-scale mining (galamsey) menace, following a crucial meeting at the Jubilee House on October 3, 2024.

The meeting, initiated by the President, aimed to address the environmental and social devastation caused by galamsey. Both parties acknowledged the need for collective action and sustainable mining practices.

According to the Ministry of Information, the government reaffirmed its commitment to engaging stakeholders in the pursuit of environmental protection and sustainable mining.

Organised Labour, which had threatened to embark on a nationwide strike over the issue, appears to have made progress with the government. Details of the agreed-upon collaborative efforts are yet to be disclosed.

The outcome of the meeting is seen as a positive step towards addressing the long-standing galamsey problem. With Ghana’s December 7 elections approaching, the Akufo-Addo administration faces intense scrutiny over its handling of the issue.

As the nation awaits concrete actions, stakeholders remain hopeful that this commitment will translate into tangible results in the fight against galamsey.
