The Ghanaian Diaspora Union in Europe has issued a call to action to Ghana’s presidential candidates, urging them to provide specific details on their plans to reduce charges at the country’s ports. This move aims to decrease the financial burden on importers and enhance business operations.

Flagbearers of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and John Mahama, respectively, have pledged to reform port fees. However, the Union considers these promises too vague.

Dr. Bawumia proposes harmonizing port charges with regional ports, such as Lome-Togo, while John Mahama vows to rationalize fees, eliminate unnecessary charges, and end excessive shipping fees.

Ibrahim Isshak, President of the Union, emphasized the urgent need for clarity, citing concerns over excessive import duties and taxes crippling businesses. The Union demands a 50% reduction in import duties and the removal of “nuisance taxes” like processing fees and network charges.

Additionally, the Union seeks specifics on programs and opportunities earmarked to support the diaspora community.

The Ghanaian Diaspora Union has pledged to track and hold accountable the elected party or individual come January 2025, ensuring transparency and action on these critical issues.
