The US Department of State has officially launched its online passport renewal system, making it easier for eligible citizens to renew their passports. The State Department noted that the beta system, which started in June 2024, is fully functional. It is available to all US citizens aged 25 and above with a passport issued within the last 15 years.
To renew your passport online, you need to meet the following criteria:
- Be at least 25 years old.
- Live in the US (state or territory).
- Have a passport valid for 10 years and issued within the last 15 years.
- The old passport should not be mutilated or damaged.
The online renewal process involves creating a MyTravelGov account, completing the necessary forms, and making payments online. The application process takes approximately 40 minutes; however, the processing time remains the same as the older method. Each application takes about 6 to 8 weeks of service time.
The new system streamlines the process and makes the application process more convenient.
