Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire – The 12th Conference on Climate Change and Development in Africa (CCDA-XII) commenced today, bringing together key stakeholders to address the urgent challenges posed by climate change across the continent.
In his opening address, Côte d’Ivoire’s Minister of Environment, Jacques Assahoré Konan, emphasized the magnitude of the climate crisis and its disproportionate impact on Africa. He highlighted the need for adequate financing to support adaptation efforts.
Hanan Morsy, ECA Deputy Executive Secretary and Chief Economist, stressed the critical shortfall in climate finance, calling for innovative solutions that do not exacerbate Africa’s debt burden.
Josefa Correia Sacko, Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy, and Sustainable Environment at the African Union Commission, highlighted the immense financial requirements for Africa’s climate commitments, emphasizing the need for unity in the continent’s approach.
Antony Nyong, Director of Climate Change and Green Growth at the African Development Bank, emphasized the need for recognition and compensation for Africa’s significant contributions to global mitigation efforts.
The conference will focus on critical themes such as climate finance, green growth, climate justice, and regional cooperation, providing a vital platform for African leaders, policymakers, and experts to collaborate on strategies for a sustainable and resilient future.
