Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has emphasized the crucial role of digital identity and address systems in Ghana’s digitalisation journey. Speaking during his campaign tour, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the significance of these systems in modern economies, citing Ghana’s progress as a testament to their importance.
Dr. Bawumia, who has championed Ghana’s digitalisation drive, recalled his 2010 book, “Monetary Policy and Financial Sector Reforms in Africa,” where he advocated for African economies to go digital. He noted that his focus on digitalisation as Vice President was a deliberate effort to drive economic transformation.
The Vice President explained that a solid foundation was necessary for Ghana’s digitalisation to take off, citing the issuance of the Ghanacard and the development of a digital address system as key achievements. With 18 million Ghana cards issued, representing 85% of adults, Ghana leads sub-Saharan Africa in digital identity.
Dr. Bawumia also stressed the importance of a digital address system, highlighting its role in facilitating business operations and economic growth. He noted that the absence of a functional address system would hinder economic progress.
Despite initial skepticism, Dr. Bawumia remained committed to building these digital foundations, which have now become the backbone of Ghana’s digitalisation drive. As the country continues to make strides in digitalisation, the Vice President’s vision for a digital economy is becoming a reality.
