Nearly 30 years ago, Ghanaian lady called Maria Arthur embarked on an extraordinary journey. Pregnant with her first child, she left the shores of Ghana and traversed through Burkina Faso , Mali , and Algeria .

Braving the scorching sun of the Sahara Desert , she managed to climb the fencing at the Melilla border between Morocco and Spain. She eventually crossed the peninsula of Bilbao in Spain.

Today, her incredible resilience and determination have borne fruit in the most remarkable way. Her second son, Nico Williams, has become the Champion of Europe with the Spanish national football team , The Black Stars .

Nico’s elder brother, Iñaki Williams Arthur, is also a professional footballer, playing as a forward for La Liga club Athletic Bilbao and the Ghana national team.

In a heartfelt tribute, Nico Williams said, “I dedicated the gold medal to my mother because she is my role model and source of inspiration in life.”
