Ghana and Malta Strengthen Ties, Pledge to Enhance Cooperation

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, paid a working visit to the Republic of Malta on Monday, July 15, 2024, where she held bilateral meetings with top Maltese officials. The meetings aimed to strengthen existing bilateral relations and explore new areas of cooperation between Ghana and Malta.

During the visit, Mad. Ayorkor Botchwey met with the President of Malta, Myriam Spiteri Debono, Prime Minister Dr. Robert Abela, and the Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade, Dr. Ian Borg. Both sides acknowledged the strong and cordial relations between the two countries, which have led to high-level visits from both sides.

The leaders discussed various areas of cooperation, including renewable energy, tourism, aviation, and the health sector. They agreed to further enhance cooperation through initiatives that would increase trade, joint ventures in renewable energy, collaborative efforts in tourism and aviation, educational exchanges, and the sharing of best practices in governance and economic development.

The leaders also underscored the need to implement the Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) and agreements signed between the two countries to ensure mutually beneficial outcomes.

Ayorkor Botchwey also informed her Maltese counterparts of her candidature for the position of Secretary-General of the Commonwealth and shared her vision for the organization. She emphasized the need for a transformative agenda focused on building resilience to tackle contemporary challenges such as stagnant economies, growing inequality, high youth unemployment, climate disasters, and threats to democracy and human rights.

Malta, being an active member of the Commonwealth, expressed readiness to continue contributing to enhancing the organization’s relevance to achieve tangible outcomes that benefit all Member Countries.
