Dr. George Prah, the Medical Director of the Trauma and Specialist Hospital at Winneba, has been temporarily relieved of his duties pending the outcome of an investigation into the alleged abandonment of a patient in a bush, leading to the patient’s death. The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has constituted a committee to conduct an independent investigation into the matter, with a deadline of 30 days to submit a report.

The incident, which occurred on June 10, 2024, involved an elderly woman who was discharged from the hospital and abandoned by the roadside near a bush, despite reportedly suffering from leg injuries and mental illness. Photos and videos shared online showed the woman lying by the road, with a wheelchair and P.O.P. on both legs, before she eventually passed away.

The GHS has assured that appropriate action will be taken at the end of the enquiry to ensure that any persons connected with the unfortunate incident are brought to book. The committee investigating the incident includes representatives from the GHS, the Ministry of Health, the Social Welfare Department, and a senior Nurse Manager.

The incident has generated significant public interest and outrage, with many calling for accountability and justice for the deceased patient and her family.
