The Ghanaian Community in Chicago Metropolis is known for gigs and parties, especially during the summer months, making the community here one of the most vibrant and lively communities in the diaspora. The biggest and most spectacular event in the community, Ghanafest, is organized by the Ghana National Council of Metropolitan Chicago. Though It overshadows the rest of the activities, smaller gatherings like the Southern Volta Association’s (SVA), annual BBQ or Picnic, create a unique and lively forum for members , aspiring members and others to mingle and have fun. With various mouthwatering authentic Ghanaian foods, music, and drinks adding to the cheerful atmosphere, these social events have recently seen remarkable growth and turnout as people show up for socialization and revel in the festivities. Some up-and-coming Deejays and the seasoned ones use these occasions to finetune their trade and advertise themselves. It also serves as a uniting platform, bringing together Ghanaians from diverse backgrounds to mingle and create delightful memories. Indeed, they are not just about fun and games; they are a testament to the strong sense of community and camaraderie among Ghanaians in the Chicago Metropolis.
The President of the Association, Paul Sogbe, thanked members for their dedication and support over the years. The Financial Secretary, Donatus Kotogbor, reminded members to pay their monthly dues and asked aspiring members to register with him. Some attendees took the opportunity to register and join the organization.
Members of the group used the occasion to honor Mama Awushie Adjaho I with a giant acrylic canvas portrait of her in full regalia.
The turnout for this year’s event was remarkably awesome.
