One popular and well-known yearly event in the Chicago Ghanaian community is the Annual Ewe Association Xmas party. On this day, the Ewe Association, supported by other community associations and groups, marks the yuletide with dance, cuisine, and captivating cultural performances. This year, the event occurred on Saturday, December 17, 2022, at the Crystal Grand Banquets,12416 S. Archer Avenue, Lemont, Illinois.
As expected, the turnout was high. In addition, large numbers of the Fante Benevolent Society, Okuapeman Fekuw, Kwahu United, Wogbe Dzeke, Ga-Dangbe Community Organization, and the Northern Union were present. Also, the journalist Berko Akoto, and his wife, Pauline, fully supported the event.
The outgoing President of the GNC, Paa Kwasi Sam, was there to grace the occasion. He used the opportunity to thank members of the Ewe association for inviting him. He advised the incoming administration of the GNC to institute an annual Christmas or new year party to enable members of the community come together and celebrate each other. He presented the new Queen-mother of the Ewe Association, Mama Edzeani Dumenu, with an elegant and beautiful canvas print. The portrait shows Mama Edzeani seated in regalia. The gesture was to thank the Queen-mother for supporting him during his mom’s funeral and burial in Ghana recently.
The President-Elect of the GNC, Kassim Abukari, and some of his lieutenants were in attendance.
The President of the Ewe Association, Ms. Carolyn Amexo, who doubles as the President-Elect, used the occasion to thank community members present for supporting the Ewe Association. She informed the audience that the Ewe Association, known as Milenovisi, seeks to promote unity, culture, and love. She mentioned among others, a new membership drive and a strong welfare program as some of the achievements in her first term. Miss Amexo ended her remarks by asking members of the community to patronize the monthly Health Clinics organized by the GNC. Some members of the Ewe Association received awards for their services and dedication to the organization.
With minimal interruption due to short speeches and non-elaborate ceremonies, revelers had time to dance merrily late into the night. Majority of the attendees congratulated the organizers for a job well done. DJ Teddy was outstanding, as he dished out the best selections in his arsenal to the enjoyment of the crowd. He kept the joyful crowd on their feet with agbadza, borborbor, highlife, old school, and others.
The emcees, Efo Steve Dei, “the people’s servant,” and Mawusi Kudjawu, nailed their responsibilities by radiating the charisma that kept the party going smoothly and entertaining.
