Sankofa: Ghanafest 2019

The most spectacular African cultural exposition in the diasporas, Ghanafest, is upon us again. The organizers, the Ghana National Council of Metropolitan Chicago, GNC, have left no stone unturned to ensure that revelers enjoy every bit of the celebrations. The lineup is the best artists from Ghana and top deejays in the United States residing in the Chicago area. The showcase starts with a corporate dinner on July 29 and ends on Sunday, July 31.

The merriment starts with pre-Ghanafest corporate excellence and dinner awards on July 29, 2022, from 7 pm to 10 pm. The elegant Chateau Del Mar, 8301 W, 95th Street, Hickory Hills, IL 60457, is the most suitable venue to host such a glamorous event. The theme for the dinner is Introducing Kente in the Boardroom. Expected in attendance are Ministers of state and other prominent Africans to grace the occasion. They are Ghana’s Ambassador to the USA, H.E Hajia Alima Mahama; Minister for Tourism, Arts and culture, Dr. Mohammed Awal; H.E Ambassador Dr. Arikana Chihombori-Quao, Founder, President, and CEO of ADDI; Honorable Kennedy Agyapong, MP (NPP) Assin Central and others. The occasion presents an excellent opportunity for attendees to network, meet, and chat with the dignitaries. The entrance fee is $75.00 each. There is no discount for couples. For such a prestigious event, it is advisable to purchase tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.

Saturday, July 30, is the D-Day. All roads lead to Washington Park, 5600 S Martin Luther King Dr, Chicago, IL. The theme for the Saturday celebrations is dubbed Sankofa, meaning bringing back the Ghanaian culture after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event is from 11 am to 10 pm. Chiefs and Queens from the various affiliate Associations of the GNC will showcase the diverse ethnic culture they represent. Also displayed for sales will be authentic arts and crafts, traditional foods like jollof rice, waakye, and many other mouth-watering Ghanaian dishes.

Specially flown from Ghana to the USA to entertain attendees are talented and famous artists such as D-Black, Fameye, Kofi Kinaata, Akwaboah, and the only lady Sefa. With such an array of talented and famous artists performing, one wonders why the gate fee is only $15,00 each. Speaking to the CEO and owner of Loggy Entertainment and Loggy Travel and Tours, Prince Nana Boakye Yiadom, a.k.a Papa Loggy, he assured Ghanafest 2022 attendees that the artists are ready to storm Chicago with performances not seen before. He also stated that all the artists had obtained visas to travel to the United States. With a reputation for putting up the best shows globally, Papa Loggy appealed to the organizers to allocate more time for the artists to perform.

Closing the curtain on the 34th Ghanafest celebrations is a soccer match between Ghana and Liberia. Selected finest soccer talents, all citizens from both countries in the Chicago area will lock horns to determine who gets the bragging rights at the end of the match.
