NDC USA IT Team to the IMF; Don’t Approve any Program that doesn’t include a 5G Broadband Plan for Ghana

President Akuffo Addo takes Ghana back to the IMF

Let’s face it! Among many challenges, our colonial masters left us a dysfunctional system without a National ID System. Even in the 21st century, we still struggle without a full-fledged national railway transportation system. Now, the Information technology era has caught up with us in the 21st century, but Ghana will be left out without a plan. The World Bank defined ICTs as a general-purpose technology tool needed for sustainable development, and Ghana cannot be left out.

As Ghana prepares to return to the IMF, we, the NDC USA, propose an economic program that includes a national broadband plan to enable Ghana to leverage all the benefits this communication resource brings. After the current Vice president, who happens to be the Leader of the Government’s Economic Management Team, loudly touted the Digitalization Agenda in the 2022 budget statement, there was no budget allocation for investment in the 5G spectrum. Further, it appears the national regulator at the National Communication Authority, Mr. Joe Anokye, does not have a plan for 5G investment for our future endeavors making our case precarious. As a result, we urge the IMF Team to task the government to include a plan for 5G deployment while we build back our economy. The 5G technology aims to provide higher data speed with extremely low latency and increased reliability. This will encourage efficiency and enable innovation of digital products, improve healthcare and education delivery, and improve agriculture productivity.

In a world that has evolved to what is now known as the knowledge era, Ghana remains in dire need of a national broadband plan based on 5G technology to achieve her ICT4eD and Development agenda. The timing is just right for Ghana, and it’s imperative we engage and contend with the Subject Matter Expert Team at the IMF to make this happen. God bless the NDC USA. Long Live Ghana, and may God bless us all.
