As the COVID-19 pandemic grudgingly releases its hold on activities in Chicago and the rest of the world, communities across the globe are opening up slowly to pre-COVID-19 era outdoor and indoor programs. It is therefore of utmost delight when the President of the Ghana National Council of Metropolitan Chicago, GNC, Paa Kwasi Sam, stated that the flagship program of the council, Ghanafest, is scheduled on Saturday, July 30, 2022. He announced this at the monthly Ghanaian Community Health Clinic, which took place at the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Redemption,741 E. 84th Street, Chicago IL. In partnership with Healthcare providers and volunteers, the GNC has put in place a reliable and effective healthcare team, which provides full clinic services to members of the community free.
Staged at Washington Park, 5600 S Martin Luther King Dr, Chicago, IL, GhanaFest portrays the rich Ghanaian culture with pomp and pageantry. Chiefs and Queens of the various affiliates of the GNC amidst cultural drumming dance to cultural music from the various traditional areas in Ghana they represent. The merriment starts with a pre-Ghanafest party and ends with a post-dance party across the city. Deejays play traditional and contemporary dancehall Ghanaian songs at these venues, attracting mostly the youth and out-of-town visitors. The community fervently looks forward to that day as all activities are virtually put on hold for this special day. The festival attracts ministers of state and government officials from Ghana; Mayors and Governors of the State of Illinois, in attendance to grace the occasion.
The GNC President also assured members of the community that the council has plans to organize a back-to-school program for the youth and also for the elderly by Christmas this year.
