The National Democratic Congress today entered a new chapter in its institutional history as President John Dramani Mahama, joined the party’s leadership to officially rename the national headquarters as the Jerry John Rawlings House, a solemn and dignified tribute to the party’s founder and the first President of the Fourth Republic, the late Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings.
The ceremony, held in Accra, carried the weight of memory and the power of legacy. It was not merely a renaming but a reaffirmation of the values that shaped the NDC and influenced Ghana’s democratic evolution. The event also featured the unveiling of a striking bust of the late statesman, an artistic and symbolic reminder of a leader whose imprint on the nation remains unmistakable. The unveiling coincided with what would have been his seventy ninth birthday, adding emotional depth to a moment already rich with national significance.
President Mahama, addressing party faithful, dignitaries and invited guests, offered a moving reflection on the character of Jerry John Rawlings. He recalled the former President’s remarkable humility, noting that Rawlings consistently resisted attempts to name national monuments after him. According to President Mahama, this reluctance was not an act of modesty for show but a genuine expression of a man who believed that service to country should never be transactional and that leadership must always be anchored in integrity.
He urged Ghanaians to honour Rawlings not only through monuments and memorials but through a renewed commitment to the values he championed. He called on citizens to uphold probity, accountability and selfless service, principles that defined Rawlings’ public life and continue to serve as moral anchors for national development. The President reminded the gathering that the true measure of legacy is not in stone or bronze but in the conduct of a people determined to build a just and equitable society.
The renaming of the headquarters as the Jerry John Rawlings House stands as a permanent testament to the founder’s vision for a party rooted in social justice, discipline and national responsibility. It also signals the NDC’s intention to preserve its historical identity while charting a forward looking path under the leadership of President Mahama.
As the ceremony concluded, the atmosphere was one of reflection and renewed purpose. The bust of Rawlings now stands at the heart of the party he built, a silent but powerful reminder of the ideals that shaped a generation and continue to inspire millions across the country.
