The Volta Regional branch of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD) has issued a strong solidarity message to mark the 2026 International Albinism Awareness Day, celebrated globally on June 13 under the theme “Proudly in My Skin, Celebrating All Skin Tones.”

In a statement signed by Elikplim Afua Klu, Volta Regional President of GFD, the federation reaffirmed its commitment to promoting dignity, equality, and protection for persons with albinism. The statement noted that the day offers an opportunity to recognise the resilience, talents, and contributions of persons with albinism while renewing efforts toward an inclusive society. It emphasized that persons with albinism continue to face discrimination, stigma, social exclusion, and limited access to essential healthcare, especially eye and skin care.

The GFD commended the Persons with Albinism Association of Ghana for its ongoing advocacy and support, describing its work as vital to national progress.

Call to Action

The federation outlined key responsibilities for national stakeholders:

Government and Policymakers
Strengthen policies that enhance healthcare access, inclusive education, employment opportunities, social protection, and enforcement of anti-discrimination laws.

Local Government and Traditional Leaders
Ensure persons with albinism are included in community development and decision-making processes.

Educational Institutions
Create safe learning environments, address bullying, and provide academic support for students with albinism.

Health Institutions and Development Partners
Expand access to affordable eye care, skin protection, regular screenings, and public education on albinism-related health needs.

Media Organisations
Use media platforms to challenge stereotypes and highlight positive stories about persons with albinism.

The General Public
Reject myths and harmful beliefs, and embrace persons with albinism as equal contributors to national development.

GFD’s Commitment

The federation pledged to continue working with government agencies, civil society, and development partners to advance equality and social justice. The statement delivered a message of empowerment to persons with albinism, affirming that their identity and contributions are valuable and deserving of respect.

The message concluded with a call for unity in building a Ghana where diversity is celebrated and every individual can participate fully in society.
