Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup suffered a major blow today after confirmation that senior midfielder Thomas Partey will miss the Black Stars’ opening match against Panama on June 17 in Toronto. The setback follows a decision by Canadian immigration authorities to deny Partey’s visa application, preventing him from traveling with the team from their U.S. base camp.

According to reporting from The Athletic, FIFA has officially confirmed that Partey is unable to leave Ghana’s training base in Boston for Canada. The governing body emphasized that the issue lies entirely with Canadian immigration procedures, not FIFA’s internal processes.

In a statement, FIFA clarified:
“FIFA can confirm that player Thomas Partey will be unable to travel from Ghana’s team base camp in Boston, USA, to Canada for their first match against Panama on Wednesday, 17 June, as his visa application has been refused by the Canadian government.”

FIFA further stressed that it does not participate in visa adjudication, noting that all entry decisions are made solely by national authorities of the host countries.

A Major Setback for the Black Stars

Partey’s absence is a significant blow to Ghana’s ambitions in Group L, where the Black Stars face Panama, England, and Croatia. As one of the team’s most experienced and influential midfielders, Partey’s leadership and tactical presence were expected to anchor Ghana’s opening performance.

Team insiders acknowledge that losing Partey at this stage disrupts both strategy and squad balance. With England and Croatia looming, Ghana now faces additional pressure to secure maximum points against Panama without one of its key players.

Immigration Hurdles Cast a Shadow

This development raises broader questions about the logistical challenges teams face in a World Cup hosted across three countries with independent immigration systems. While FIFA oversees the tournament, it has no authority over national entry requirements , a reality now affecting Ghana at a critical moment.

As the Black Stars continue preparations in the United States, the technical team must quickly adjust their plans and identify a replacement capable of filling the void left by Partey’s unexpected absence.
