A predawn road tragedy at Peki‑Tsame in the Volta Region has left communities across Ghana in mourning after a violent head‑on collision between a Mercedes‑Benz container truck and a Mercedes‑Benz passenger bus claimed fifteen lives and injured twenty‑five others on Tuesday, June 2, 2026. The crash, which occurred near Peki Senior High School, shattered the quiet of the early morning and brought emergency responders racing to a scene of twisted metal, shattered glass, and desperate cries for help.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service, the container truck was travelling from Nkwanta toward Accra, while the passenger bus was en route from Battor to Kabiti in the Oti Region. In total, forty people were involved in the collision, including twenty‑one males, fifteen females, and four children. The force of the impact left several passengers trapped, prompting an urgent rescue operation by firefighters from the Peki Fire Station.
Fire personnel managed to rescue twenty‑five injured victims—twenty‑three adults and two children—who were immediately transported to the Peki Government Hospital for emergency treatment. Despite the swift response, fifteen people, made up of nine males and six females, died at the scene. Their bodies were handed over to the Police and later deposited at the hospital mortuary.
The tragedy has once again drawn national attention to the persistent dangers on Ghana’s highways, where high‑speed collisions involving long‑distance commercial vehicles continue to claim lives with heartbreaking regularity. Families from the Volta and Oti regions are now grappling with sudden loss, while survivors begin the long road to recovery and authorities work to determine the exact cause of the crash.
Investigations are underway as the nation reflects on yet another devastating reminder of the urgent need for improved road safety, stricter enforcement, and sustained public awareness to prevent such catastrophic incidents in the future.
