WASHINGTON, D.C. — A man was shot and killed Saturday after opening fire at a security checkpoint near the White House, prompting a swift and forceful response from the U.S. Secret Service and triggering heightened security across the executive complex.
Federal sources have identified the suspected gunman as Nasire Best, an individual who, according to officials familiar with the investigation, had previous encounters with the Secret Service prior to Saturday’s incident. Authorities say Best approached a checkpoint and opened fire, forcing agents to return fire to neutralize the threat.
A bystander was wounded in the crossfire, though officials have not yet released details on the individual’s condition. Emergency medical teams responded immediately, and the area was secured as agents swept the perimeter for additional threats.
The shooting occurred near one of the most sensitive access points to the White House grounds, intensifying concerns about security breaches and prompting a temporary lockdown of nearby areas. Investigators are now working to determine Best’s motive, his movements prior to the attack, and whether he acted alone.
The Secret Service has stated that there is no ongoing threat to the public, but the investigation remains active. Additional updates are expected as federal authorities review surveillance footage, interview witnesses, and analyze ballistic evidence.
