The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Johnson Pandit Asiama, held a high-level engagement with Ghanaian X content creators at Bank Square on Wednesday to address ongoing challenges regarding the repatriation of digital platform payouts.

This meeting follows a formal statement issued by the central bank on April 20, 2026, which sought to clarify the regulatory framework for creators experiencing difficulties accessing their earnings from international platforms.

During the session, Dr. Asiama underscored the economic significance of the digital creative economy, stating that the Bank of Ghana views the export of digital services with the same level of importance as traditional commodities like cocoa.

The Governor assured the gathered creators that the central bank is committed to removing bottlenecks in the payout process and encouraged them to view the institution as an accessible partner in their financial growth.

To streamline communication and policy intervention, Dr. Asiama urged the creators to form a formal professional association, which would serve as a structured channel for escalating systemic issues to the Bank for rapid resolution. He emphasized that the central bank’s primary interest is to facilitate their work and ensure that the creative sector contributes effectively to the national economy.

Regarding the legal framework for these earnings, the Governor reminded stakeholders that under current foreign exchange regulations, service export proceeds can be legally received through Foreign Exchange Accounts (FEA) held with local commercial banks or directly into Ghana Cedi accounts.

However, he noted that such transactions must be processed in strict compliance with existing regulatory requirements to ensure transparency and financial stability. The engagement concludes a period of uncertainty for local influencers and digital entrepreneurs, signaling a new era of cooperation between the regulator and the burgeoning digital export sector.
