ACCRA, Ghana – The University of Ghana (UG), Legon, is beaming with pride as one of its own, NASA astronaut Christina Koch, makes history as part of the pioneering Artemis II crew. The mission, which marks humanity’s return to lunar orbit, represents a monumental milestone for both the global scientific community and the premier Ghanaian institution.
From Legon to the Lunar Orbit
Koch, a member of the four-person crew, is currently embarking on a journey that will take her approximately 252,000 miles from Earth. While her journey began on a launchpad, her academic roots trace back 27 years to the University of Ghana.
In 1999, Koch attended the University of Ghana as an international exchange student, where she immersed herself in the study of Astrophysics. Her time at Legon served as a foundational chapter in a career that has now seen her shatter records in space exploration.
A Historic “First” for Ghana and the World
Beyond her role as a mission specialist, Koch’s participation in Artemis II carries deep symbolic weight for the African continent:
- The Only Woman: Koch is the sole female astronaut on this historic lunar mission.
- Carrying the Flag: In a gesture of gratitude and global unity, she has become the first female astronaut to carry the Ghanaian flag into deep space.
- Record Breaker: This mission adds to her already illustrious career, which includes holding the record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman.
Inspiring the Next Generation
The University of Ghana community has expressed immense gratification in Koch’s achievements, noting that her trajectory highlights the world-class caliber of the university’s academic environment.
“Her journey continues to inspire generations, highlighting the global impact of Ghana’s academic institutions in shaping world-class professionals who push the boundaries of human achievement.”
As the Artemis II capsule orbits the Moon, the “Premier University” stands as a testament to the fact that the stars are within reach for those who begin their journey in the lecture halls of Legon.
For the students currently walking the same paths Koch once did, her mission is a powerful reminder: The sky is no longer the limit.

We are very proud of her! Ghana and for that matter, Legon is therefore represented on this historic
milestone!
Congratulations to her, Ghana and Legon!
