The spirit of loyalty, gratitude, and enduring brotherhood was on full display over the weekend as the 2001 graduating class of Opoku Ware School—popularly known as the AZ Group—officially handed over a transformative GHS500,000 landscape project to their alma mater. The gesture marked the group’s silver jubilee since completing the school, and it has instantly become one of the most impactful alumni-led projects in recent years.

The handover ceremony formed part of activities marking the school’s 74th Anniversary Speech and Prize-Giving Day, held at the Nana Joe Mensah Auditorium during the Akatakyie Homecoming Weekend. Themed “Building Alumni Excellence: Honouring the Past, Present and Future,” the celebration also featured a spirited student debate, a football tournament, and a mentoring session designed to inspire the next generation of Akatakyie.
According to the association’s Global President, Kat. Mike Adu-Domfeh (AB146), the project represents the final phase of a five-year landscaping masterplan adopted by the fraternity. The initiative began in 2022 when the AV Group, celebrating their 25th anniversary, committed to enhancing the school’s environment to support effective teaching and learning.
Project architect Kat. Nana Agyemang Cobbinah (AZ295) detailed the extensive scope of work: lush grassing, the planting of shade trees, construction of semi-circular reinforced concrete seating areas to encourage student interaction, a modern laundry area with concrete seats and table, ten standing pipes, five reinforced concrete scrub basins, floor drains, 600 square meters of pavement blocks, and kerbs to clearly define pedestrian walkways. The result is a serene, functional, and aesthetically pleasing space that elevates the entire campus.
For Kat. George Wereko-Brobbey (AZ390), President of the AZ Group, the project is both symbolic and deeply personal. “We recognise the profound impact Opoku Ware School has had on our lives. This silver jubilee project is our way of giving back. Even though we’ve stayed connected virtually over the years, this was a chance to reunite physically from across the globe, celebrate one another, and relive the good old days. It has been pure joy,” he shared.
Headmaster Rev. Fr. Stephen Owusu Sekyere expressed heartfelt appreciation to the group, noting that the project has significantly enhanced the beauty and appeal of the campus. He assured the alumni that the school will maintain the facility diligently for the benefit of future generations.
The AZ Group’s legacy gift stands as a shining example of what committed alumni can achieve—an investment not only in infrastructure, but in pride, identity, and the enduring heritage of Opoku Ware School.
