The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested four key members of a notorious carjacking group known as the “Duku Syndicate” in connection with the robbery and murder of Mr. Andrews Amankwah at Ohwim-Amanfrom.
The breakthroughs occurred between February 18 and February 22, 2026, following a coordinated intelligence-led operation ordered by the Inspector-General of Police involving the Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team and the CID Anti-Armed Robbery Unit.
The suspects in custody have been identified as 47-year-old Akwasi Manu, who was found in possession of the deceased victim’s mobile phone; 33-year-old Bashiru Tanko, alias “TK”; 35-year-old Kojo Amponsah, alias “Kamakazi”; and 38-year-old Emmanuel Kwame Appiah, alias “Taller,” who is believed to have acted as the syndicate’s driver during the fatal robbery.
Police reports indicate that the alleged leader of the group, 42-year-old Eric Antwi Duku, died at the hospital after sustaining gunshot wounds during a police operation on February 22. Investigations revealed that the syndicate specialized in the surveillance and theft of Toyota Hilux and Land Cruiser vehicles and had recently escalated their tactics to include the use of lethal force.
Recovered evidence includes a Bruni Mod 84 pistol with live ammunition, a tracking detection device, forged vehicle documents, and an impounded Toyota Corolla. The group has also been linked to a separate fatal robbery at Kronum and multiple vehicle thefts across Tarkwa and Kumasi.
The suspects, who were previously wanted by the Western Central Regional Police Command, remain in custody awaiting arraignment while forensic examinations of the seized firearm continue and efforts to apprehend remaining accomplices remain active.
