In a significant diplomatic breakthrough for the African continent, all member states of the African Union have unanimously endorsed a proposal by President John Dramani Mahama to seek formal global recognition of the transatlantic slave trade as the gravest crime against humanity.

The endorsement, announced by Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, positions Ghana at the forefront of a global movement to demand reparations and the unconditional return of looted cultural artifacts.

Following the successful consensus reached at the African Union, President Mahama is now scheduled to present the initiative to Caribbean leaders at the 50th CARICOM Summit on February 24, 2026, where he is expected to secure a similar adoption. This strategic alliance between Africa and the Caribbean serves as the final precursor to the formal tabling of the resolution at the United Nations General Assembly, which is slated for March 25, 2026.

Minister Ablakwa credited the milestone to the persistent efforts of officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs alongside a global coalition of activists and experts. Beyond the pursuit of historical justice, the Minister emphasized that this unified diplomatic front is part of a broader commitment to resetting the African development paradigm.

He noted that the initiative aligns with a new leadership approach focused on creating tangible wealth and economic opportunities for the continent’s citizens through the lens of truth and restorative justice.
