President John Dramani Mahama has announced the imminent commencement of the first phase of the Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam Project, a landmark national infrastructure initiative valued at nearly one billion dollars. Speaking during a courtesy call from the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs on Tuesday, February 10, the President detailed a strategic plan to execute the project in two distinct phases to ensure long-term efficiency and sustainability.

The first phase will focus primarily on hydropower generation, with preparatory works designed to enable the dam to produce between 60 and 70 megawatts of electricity. Additionally, a solar power component will be integrated into the project to contribute an additional 30 to 40 megawatts, bringing the total expected output to over 100 megawatts.

The second phase of the ambitious project is slated to focus on agricultural transformation through the development of extensive irrigation infrastructure. This stage will involve the construction of canals, the installation of pumping systems, and the preparation of farmland to support large-scale irrigation efforts.

President Mahama emphasized that the dual focus on energy and agriculture is essential for the dam’s overall economic viability and the country’s development agenda. The visit by the traditional authorities, led by Pe Ditundini Adiali Ayagitam III, Paramount Chief of the Chiana Traditional Area, underscored the ongoing collaboration between the state and traditional leaders in fostering peace and national unity.
