The United States has confirmed the deployment of military personnel to Nigeria, marking the first official acknowledgment of American forces on the ground since U.S. airstrikes targeted ISIS positions in West Africa in December. The move signals a significant escalation in Washington’s commitment to countering jihadist networks operating across the region.
According to U.S. officials, the team has been dispatched to support Nigerian security forces as they confront ISIS‑affiliated militants whose activities have intensified across parts of northern Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin. The deployment underscores growing concern in Washington about the spread of extremist violence and its implications for regional stability and U.S. national security interests.
This development follows high‑level security discussions held in November 2025, when the Assistant to the Secretary of War for Public Affairs and Senior Advisor, Sean Parnell, released a detailed readout of a meeting between U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and a Nigerian delegation led by National Security Advisor Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.
During the November 20 meeting at the Pentagon, Secretary Hegseth and NSA Ribadu explored strategies to curb escalating violence against Christians in Nigeria and to dismantle jihadist groups operating in West Africa. Secretary Hegseth emphasized the need for Nigeria to demonstrate both urgency and long‑term commitment in protecting vulnerable communities. He also reaffirmed the U.S. intention to work “by, with, and through” Nigerian forces to deter and degrade terrorist organizations that pose threats to both nations.
The deployment of U.S. troops is expected to enhance intelligence sharing, operational coordination, and counterterrorism capabilities as Nigeria continues to battle ISIS‑West Africa Province (ISWAP) and other extremist factions.
