In a significant move to bolster Ghana’s cultural diplomacy, Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has formally celebrated the global elevation of the nation’s iconic Kente cloth following its official induction into UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Hosting a high-level delegation of master weavers and designers from Agotime in the Volta Region—led by the Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie—the Vice President characterized the achievement as a definitive victory for Ghanaian identity and the preservation of artisanal excellence.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang noted that the UNESCO designation provides a vital international platform, affirming that Kente is not merely a commercial textile but a living historical record and a repository of indigenous knowledge systems passed down through centuries.

During the engagement, the delegation presented the Vice President with a meticulously crafted Kente sample, which she accepted as a symbol of the nation’s enduring cultural wealth.

She emphasized that the intricate patterns and weaving techniques represent the intellectual property of Ghanaian ancestors, necessitating robust protection in a rapidly globalizing world.

Addressing the future of the industry, the Vice President reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to the creative and cultural sectors.

She pledged enhanced support for the artisan communities in Agotime and beyond, ensuring that the master weavers who sustain these ancient traditions are integrated into the modern economy. By prioritizing the preservation of these indigenous industries, the government aims to ensure that Ghana’s heritage remains a thriving, sustainable force on the global stage, providing both cultural pride and economic opportunity for future generations.
