Mrs. Sabah Zita Benson formally assumed her role as the High Commissioner of the Republic of Ghana to the United Kingdom and Ireland on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, following a historic presentation of her Letters of Credence to His Majesty King Charles III.

Held at St James’s Palace, the ceremony served as a formal reaffirmation of the enduring diplomatic ties and cordial relations between the two nations.

Mrs. Benson’s appointment marks two significant milestones in Ghana’s diplomatic record. She becomes the first woman to hold the position of High Commissioner to the United Kingdom since Ghana gained independence in 1957.

Additionally, the audience at St James’s Palace represented a rare procedural event, as she is the first High Commissioner to be received by a reigning monarch at that specific location since 1910, a tradition last observed during the reign of King Edward VII.

The presentation was characterized by high levels of distinction and honor, signaling a new chapter in Ghana’s representation in London. As she begins her tenure, Mrs. Benson is expected to build upon the existing bilateral framework between Ghana and the United Kingdom, focusing on mutual interests and the strengthening of historical partnerships.
