The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, has urged journalists to demystify complex economic indicators to foster public confidence and informed civic engagement. Speaking at a workshop organized by the Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) in Ada on Saturday, January 24, 2026, Dr. Asiama emphasized that breaking down inflation dynamics, interest rate paths, and foreign exchange norms into accessible stories is essential for citizens to engage with policy through understanding rather than fear.
In a speech delivered on his behalf by Dr. Francis Yao Kumah, Advisor to the Governor, Dr. Asiama highlighted Ghana’s significant economic progress, noting that inflation saw a sharp decline from 23.8% in December 2024 to 5.4% by December 2025. This stabilization, alongside a more orderly foreign exchange market and a rules-based auction framework, has provided the country with a stronger foundation than the previous year.
The Governor further detailed key institutional achievements, including the Bank of Ghana Amendments Bill of 2025 and advancements in digital finance and payment innovations. He noted that the nation’s external buffers have been significantly bolstered, with gross international reserves rising to over US$13.9 billion, representing approximately 5.7 months of import cover.
Dr. Asiama attributed this increased confidence partly to the success of the gold program and enhanced market oversight. Concluding his address, he challenged media practitioners to maintain high standards of accountability by asking tough questions and examining policy outcomes, while cautioning them to distinguish long-term economic direction from short-term market volatility.
