The Parliamentary Select Committee on Science and Technology has commenced a three-day working visit to the AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Gold Mine to evaluate the facility’s adherence to national environmental regulations. The Ranking Member and leader of the delegation, Prof. Hamza Adam, described the visit as a fact-finding mission focused on reviewing the mine’s Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and its compliance with Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 246.
Prof. Adam expressed particular concern over the degradation of water bodies in mining regions, emphasizing that Parliament holds the authority to recommend the suspension or revocation of mining licenses if serious violations are discovered, though he clarified that the mission aims to promote sustainable practices rather than victimize the company.
In response, the Managing Director of the AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, Ing. Samuel Pope, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship and international best practices.
He assured the visiting delegation that the mine operates under strict supervision and in full compliance with the requirements set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Minerals Commission, and the Lands Commission. Ing. Pope emphasized that environmental sustainability remains a core priority for the company’s management as they continue to align their operations with both domestic laws and global mining standards.
